Newport Neuro is located at 221 Spring Street in Newport, Rhode Island, as part of A Mental Health Collective + Art Gallery.
A neuropsychological assessment can be requested for a number of reasons including to determine one's cognitive strengths and weaknesses, to help understand the cause of problems with thinking and understanding, and to identify which cognitive abilities should be the focus of remediation. A comprehensive evaluation also provides the basis for making decisions and/or adjustments to you or your child's educational plan and determine the skills to work on.
While this list is not exhaustive, the most common complaints include, attention deficits, communication and language difficulties, emotional and behavioral dysregulation, intellectual and developmental delays, giftedness, motor coordination difficulties, and specific learning difficulties in reading, writing, and/or mathematics.
During a typical neuropsychological evaluation, the mental functions tested include:
Executive functioning.
Attention/concentration.
General intellect.
Motor speed and dexterity.
Learning and memory.
Processing speed.
Visuospatial reasoning.
Expressive and receptive language skills.
Reading/reading comprehension.
Applied mathematics/fluency.
Spelling/Written composition.
Mood, personality, and behavior.
The length of time for testing varies based on the nature of the reason for the examination.
Depending on the situation, three to six hours is typical. The testing time depends on which tests need to be administered and breaks are incorporated.
